The words break and attraction usually do not go together because if you’re riding an attraction, you’re probably not taking a break at the same time. But I’m here to tell you that the two can be done at the same time if you pick the right ride. Here is my families’ favorite attractions that also allow us to take a break whether it be from the crowds, the heat, or both.
Tomorrowland Transit Authority People Mover – Magic Kingdom
If you’re in Tomorrowland, look up. You’ll notice these inconspicuous looking cars on a track running above the ground, ducking in and out of buildings, all above Tomorrowland. That’s the People Mover and it’s the ultimate people watching break time attraction. The ride goes inside Space Mountain, around Carousel of Progress, and also gives you glimpses of Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin and Merchants of Venus all from above. There’s some narration of what you’re looking at but for the most part it’s a quiet ride and because it’s going at a good pace and in and out of buildings it’s usually a pretty cool ride too. We like to ride this after lunch while our food settles and the crowds are starting to climb to get a mid-day break.
Walt Disney World Railroad – Magic Kingdom
That train running around the perimeter of the Magic Kingdom serves both a functional purpose as well as being a relaxing ride. There’s three different stations to board including Main Street, Frontierland and Fantasyland. If you’re looking to get from one side of the park to the other without walking, it’s a good option to consider. If you’re not really looking to go anywhere at all, you can just ride it around and around the loop as many time as you want. No one will kick you off. This is a good option for moms with infants that are breastfeeding or napping. It’s also a good option for cranky toddlers as it’s a cool train ride, but also gets them off their feet, away from the crowds and in the shade for a break.
Living with the Land – Epcot
This is a boat ride that travels thru some different environments of the world before taking you on a short tour of the greenhouse within the Land Pavilion at Epcot. There’s quiet narration throughout to educate you on their growing programs. Half of it takes place in the dark and the other half thru the greenhouses is in the light. It’s great boat ride indoors and therefore is a good option to take a break from the heat as well as the crowds.
Spaceship Earth – Epcot
Like Living with the Land, there is quiet narration throughout this ride explaining the history of communication throughout the world. The slow movement of the ride, the air conditioning and the darkness make it quite the relaxing ride. Many would argue there’s also something comforting about the smells. My favorite part is when you reach the top and you are looking at planet earth as if you were in space. Aaahhh, I’m relaxed just thinking of it.
Voyage of the Little Mermaid – Hollywood Studios
I had a hard time trying to come up with a break time attraction for Hollywood Studios. Truthfully, there’s some kind of intensity to every attraction currently there and even all the ones that are planed. If the Great Movie Ride were still around I would have picked that one but because it’s not I picked the close second. Out of all the attractions at Hollywood Studios, Voyage of the Little Mermaid is your best bet for a break. It’s an indoor theater unlike Beauty and the Beast and Indian Jones and unlike Frozen Sing-A-Long it’s much more low-key. Great option to explore when your looking to cool off and catch your breath.
Na’vi River Journey – Animal Kingdom
Out of all the attractions on this list, this is probably the only one you’ll have to wait in line for. I definitely wouldn’t wait in line more than 30 minutes for it as that pretty much negates the point of relaxation but if you can get a Fast Pass than it’s worth it. The soothing music and chanting along with the easy gliding of the boat on the water and the pretty scenes are very pleasant. My only wish is that it were longer!
Kilimanjaro Safari – Animal Kingdom
I wasn’t sure if I should throw this one in here but since I find it to be a great break time ride, others might agree. Besides the fact that it’s pretty bumpy in that safaris jeep, the scenery and the animals make this a great sight to see. It’s also a longer attraction giving you plenty of time off your feet to just sit back and watch what’s happening around you. Kids really enjoy the animal spotting and therefore are well behaved which allows parents to sit back and chill out.
